What News Trading Means

News trading means opening, holding or managing positions around scheduled economic releases and policy announcements. Some traders aim for the first sharp move after a number comes out, others trade the trend that follows, and many simply protect the trades they already hold.

What makes news different is speed. A price that drifted for hours can cover a full day's range in seconds when a figure surprises the market.

Prop Firm News Trading Rules

Prop firms set their own rules for trading around news, and those rules can differ between the evaluation and the stage that follows it. Before any release, read the rules for the stage you are in. At Pivex, news trading is allowed in the Challenge, and at the Pivex Trader stage trades are not opened or closed in the 5 minutes before and after a high-impact release, as covered below.

The Releases That Move Markets

Economic calendars rank events by expected impact. The ones marked high impact are the releases that most often shift expectations for interest rates and growth, and with them the prices of currencies, indices and gold.

General market behavior. How much a market reacts depends on the gap between the result and what traders expected.
ReleaseWhat it measuresMarkets that often react
Consumer price index (CPI)Inflation, as an overall figure and a core figure without food and energyThe local currency, stock indices, gold
Jobs reports, such as US nonfarm payrolls (NFP)Jobs added, the unemployment rate and wage growthUS dollar pairs, NAS100 and SPX500, gold
Central bank rate decisionsThe policy rate, plus the statement and press conference that followThe bank's own currency first, then indices and gold
Gross domestic product (GDP)How fast the economy grew, usually over a quarterThe local currency and stock indices
Retail sales and business surveysConsumer spending and business activityThe local currency, often with smaller moves

The size of a move depends less on the number than on how far it lands from the forecast. A jobs report that matches expectations can do little, while a small surprise on inflation can move the US dollar, gold and the Nasdaq 100 at once. Central bank days often bring two moves: one on the decision and one during the press conference.

How Prices Behave Around a Release

The minutes around a high-impact release tend to follow a familiar pattern. The pattern will not tell you the direction, but it shows what your orders may run into.

  • Liquidity thins before the release, as many market participants step back and wait for the number.
  • Spreads widen, sometimes to several times their normal size, and stay wide until liquidity returns. Spreads vary by instrument and are shown in the platform.
  • Prices can gap: the market jumps from one level to the next with no trading in between.
  • Slippage grows. In most platforms a stop loss becomes a market order once it is triggered, so it fills at the next available price, which can be well past the level you set.
  • The first move often reverses. A spike in one direction can be erased within minutes as the market reads the details.

Trading NFP With a Prop Firm

The US nonfarm payrolls report, or NFP, is one of the most watched releases on the calendar. It comes out monthly, usually on the first Friday, before the New York stock market opens. It combines jobs growth, the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings in one release.

Because several figures arrive at once, the first reaction can point one way and then turn as traders read the rest. EUR/USD, USD/JPY, gold (XAU/USD) and the NAS100 and SPX500 index CFDs all tend to react, so trades on several of them can add up to one large position on the US dollar.

Trading NFP with a prop firm adds one more layer: the result has to fit inside the account's loss limits. One fast move can use a large share of a 4% daily loss limit, which is why sizing comes first.

Sizing Positions Against the 4% and 6% Limits

A Pivex Challenge account has a daily loss limit of 4%, renewed every trading day at 00:00 UTC, and a static maximum loss of 6% of the starting balance. If an account crosses either limit, open trades close automatically and that account no longer counts toward the Challenge.

In any fast market, a stop can fill some pips away from its level when prices jump. Plan your size around the loss you could take if that happens, not only around the loss you expect.

Round numbers that show how slippage adds up in any fast market, for a $100K starting balance with EUR/USD at $10 per pip per standard lot.
ScenarioPips lostLossShare of the $4,000 daily limit
2.5 lots, stop fills as planned20$50012.5%
2.5 lots, 5 pips of slippage25$625About 16%
2.5 lots, 15 pips of slippage35$875About 22%
5 lots, 15 pips of slippage35$1,750About 44%

Doubling the size turns a manageable miss into close to half of the day's allowance. On the same account the 6% maximum loss is $6,000, so a few losing trades like the last row would bring the account close to its floor.

A Pre-News Checklist

Run through these steps before any high-impact release, whether you plan to trade it or not. Most take only a minute.

  1. 1Check the calendarList the releases due during your session, note their time in UTC and the markets they touch.
  2. 2Know which stage you are inNews trading is allowed in the Challenge. At the Pivex Trader stage, trades are not opened or closed in the 5 minutes before and after a high-impact release.
  3. 3Decide to trade, reduce or stay flatMake the call before the number comes out, not in the middle of a spike.
  4. 4Size for slippageSet your risk per trade so that a stop filled several pips worse still leaves plenty of room under the 4% daily loss limit.
  5. 5Check your open tradesLook at what you already hold. Positions in EUR/USD, gold and the NAS100 can all react to the same US release in the same direction.
  6. 6Watch the spreadCheck the current spread in the platform. If it is far wider than usual, waiting a few minutes can cost less than entering right away.
  7. 7Mind the 30-second ruleTrades closed within 30 seconds count as high-frequency trading, which is not allowed, so a quick in and out on the spike is not a plan.

News Trading Rules at Pivex

News trading is allowed in the Pivex Challenge. You can open or hold positions around data releases and central bank decisions, and the same objectives apply as on any other day: the 10% profit target, the 4% daily loss limit, the 6% maximum loss, at least 5 trading days and the consistency rule.

At the Pivex Trader stage, trades are not opened or closed in the 5 minutes before and after a high-impact release. Check the economic calendar for high-impact times before each session at that stage.

Rules That Matter Most on News Days

  • Consistency: your largest trading day stays under 50% of total profit, so one big release can weigh on it.
  • High-frequency trading, meaning trades closed within 30 seconds, is not allowed.
  • Oversized positions on one instrument are not allowed; the Help Center explains the limit.
  • Hedging across accounts and copying trades from other people or third-party services are not allowed.
  • Tick scalping, latency arbitrage, grid and martingale strategies are not allowed.

An Extra Safety Net on Membership Accounts

Pivex Membership accounts also carry Daily Loss Protection. If an account loses 3% in one trading day, its open positions close and trading on that account pauses, and the dashboard shows a countdown to when trading resumes. It applies once per account and does not change the 4% daily loss limit or the 6% maximum loss.

It works as a backstop, not as a plan. Positions close at the prices available at that moment, so the final loss can differ from exactly 3%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is news trading allowed at Pivex?

Yes, news trading is allowed in the Challenge. At the Pivex Trader stage, trades are not opened or closed in the 5 minutes before and after a high-impact release.

Can I trade NFP during the Pivex Challenge?

Yes. The US jobs report and other high-impact releases can be traded in the Challenge, under the same 4% daily loss limit, 6% maximum loss and consistency rule as any other day.

How long before and after news do the Pivex Trader rules apply?

5 minutes before and 5 minutes after a high-impact release. In that window, trades are not opened or closed at the Pivex Trader stage. The Challenge has no such window.

Why do spreads widen around news?

Liquidity thins as many market participants wait for the number, so the gap between buy and sell prices grows. Spreads vary by instrument and are shown in the platform.

Can my stop loss fill at a worse price during news?

Yes. In a fast market a triggered stop fills at the next available price, which can be past your level if the price gaps. Size your trades with that in mind.

Does news trading affect the consistency rule?

It can. Your largest trading day needs to stay under 50% of total profit, so a single large news day can take up much of that share.

Does Daily Loss Protection apply on news days?

On Membership accounts, Daily Loss Protection works the same on any trading day: if the account loses 3% in one trading day, open positions close and trading pauses, once per account. The dashboard shows when trading resumes.

Which markets react most to economic news?

The currency of the country releasing the data usually reacts first, and gold and index CFDs such as NAS100 and SPX500 often move on major US data. Every market on Pivex is traded as a CFD.
