Stock Trading With a Prop Firm

A stock CFD tracks the share price of a listed company. When you open a position, you gain or lose the difference between the price at entry and the price at exit, multiplied by your position size. You can buy if you expect the price to rise or sell if you expect it to fall, with the same order ticket for both.

These are CFDs, and the distinction matters. Pivex does not offer real shares or options: you trade the price on a simulated account with real-time market data, and you do not own the shares. Pivex is not a broker and does not provide investment services.

The Markets list in the platform shows every stock CFD currently available.
SymbolCompanyWhat the business does
AAPLAppleiPhone, Mac, wearables and a large services business
TSLATeslaElectric vehicles, battery storage and energy products
METAMeta PlatformsFacebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and digital advertising
GOOGLAlphabet (Google)Search, YouTube, Android and cloud services

If you want to trade stocks with a prop firm, or are looking for a funded account to trade Tesla and Apple, this is how it works at Pivex. You take a 1-Step Challenge on a simulated account, and a Tesla or Apple trade counts toward the same objectives as any other market.

A Stock CFD Versus Owning Shares

PointOwning sharesStock CFD on Pivex
What you holdShares registered in your nameA position on the share price; you do not own the shares
AccountA brokerage account funded with your own moneyA simulated account with real-time market data
DirectionGains only when the price rises, unless you borrow shares to sell shortLong or short with the same order ticket
Holding costsUsually none beyond trading feesSwaps on positions held overnight
Time frameOften months or yearsBetter suited to shorter holds, since swaps add up

Owning shares is a way to invest in a company. A stock CFD is a way to trade the movement of its price, and the two can follow the same chart while suiting very different goals.

Earnings Season

Listed companies report results four times a year, and the weeks when most large companies report are known as earnings season. Each report covers revenue and profit and often includes guidance for the coming quarter, and the market compares all of it with what analysts expected.

The reaction can be large. A stock such as TSLA or META can move several percent on a single report, sometimes ten percent or more, and the move often comes as a gap because results are usually released before the market opens or after it closes. Guidance and the tone of the call with analysts can matter as much as the numbers.

Three Ways to Handle a Report

  • Stay flat: close the position before the release and look for a trade once the price settles.
  • Hold smaller: keep a reduced position whose worst plausible gap fits inside your daily limit.
  • Trade the reaction: wait for the report, then trade the move with a defined stop once the market has had time to absorb it.

Exchange Hours

Stock CFDs follow the hours of the exchange where the shares are listed, Monday to Friday. There is no weekend trading, and exchange holidays close the market for the day. The platform's Market Hours panel shows the current schedule for each instrument.

Within the session, activity clusters at the open and the close. The first stretch after the open absorbs overnight news and earnings, and prices can travel a long way quickly. The final part of the session often brings heavy volume as large investors adjust positions, while the middle of the day tends to be calmer unless news breaks.

Gaps Between Sessions

A gap happens when a stock opens at a different price from where it closed. Overnight earnings, company news, a sharp move in the wider market or events over the weekend can all cause one. Because the market was closed, nothing traded in between, and a stop loss fills at the first available price rather than at the level you set.

Loss from a gap against the position. On a $10K account the daily loss limit is $400 and the maximum loss is $600.
Position on a $10K accountGap of 3%Gap of 5%Gap of 8%
$2,500$75$125$200
$5,000$150$250$400
$10,000$300$500$800

A full-size position that gaps 8% against you would go past both limits before you could act. Holding through earnings or a weekend therefore calls for a position small enough that the gap you fear still fits inside your plan.

Leverage of 1:1

Stock CFDs carry leverage of 1:1 at Pivex, so the largest position you can open is about equal to your balance. Single shares can move far more than an index on their own news, and 1:1 keeps your exposure in line with the size of the account.

The maximum loss is static and measured from the starting balance. Oversized positions on one instrument are not allowed; the Help Center explains the limit.
AccountDaily loss limit (4%)Maximum loss (6%)Largest position at 1:1
$10K$400$600About $10,000
$25K$1,000$1,500About $25,000
$50K$2,000$3,000About $50,000
$100K$4,000$6,000About $100,000

Even at 1:1, a position the size of the account turns a 4% move into a full day's limit. One approach is to keep each position well below the account size and set a stop on every trade, so a single company's bad day stays a small part of yours.

What Moves Individual Stocks

  • Quarterly results and guidance, the biggest scheduled events for any company.
  • Product launches, legal and policy decisions affecting the company, management changes and major deals.
  • Analyst rating changes and price target revisions, which can move a stock before the open.
  • Sector news, such as chip demand for technology companies or advertising trends for META and GOOGL.
  • The broader market: when NAS100 falls sharply, most large technology stocks fall with it.

Large technology companies make up a big share of the Nasdaq 100. Trading AAPL, TSLA, META or GOOGL alongside NAS100 in the same direction concentrates your risk rather than spreading it.

Risk Habits for Stock CFDs

  1. 1Know the earnings datesCheck when each company you trade reports and decide your plan before the date arrives.
  2. 2Size for the gapFor any position you hold through a close, estimate the loss from a large gap and make sure it fits within the daily limit.
  3. 3Keep correlated trades in checkSeveral technology stocks in the same direction act like one larger position.
  4. 4Use a stop on every tradeSet it where the idea is wrong, then work out the size from the stop distance.
  5. 5Close everything at the targetWhen the account reaches the 10% profit target, close all trades. The dashboard tracks every objective.
